On May 7, 2025, the South Niagara Chambers of Commerce brought together business leaders, educators, and economic developers for a collaborative dialogue on the future of work at the 2025 Niagara Networks & Industry Collaborative. This event created space for cross-sector insights on key workforce priorities—from digital transformation to navigating intergenerational workplaces.
Gen Z at Work: A Call for Inclusive Leadership
In a quickly changing labour market, understanding generational dynamics matters. Attendees emphasized the importance of moving past stereotypes to intentionally supporting Gen Z’s aspirations for meaningful work, flexibility, and leadership roles. Recommendations included succession planning that centres early mentorship, flexible workplace cultures, and clear pathways from education to employment.
AI, Cybersecurity, and Digital Shifts
Discussion highlighted excitement and hesitancy around technological change. While AI offers efficiency and productivity gains, questions around accuracy, ethics, and workforce impacts exist. Leaders called for strong digital literacy, clear policies, and a culture of critical thinking that ensures technology is used responsibly and equitably.
Resilience Through Diversification
Amidst economic uncertainty, strategic diversification and regional collaboration stood out as key themes. While small businesses often face barriers like capacity and confidence, the group emphasized the need for proactive planning, scenario modeling, and knowledge-sharing across sectors. A shared ask emerged: build a “one-stop shop” for SMEs to access information, guidance, data, and mentorship.
Looking Forward:
From building intergenerational bridges to championing ethical innovation, this event highlighted a key value: when communities come together to identify challenges and imagine solutions together, transformation is possible.
