Small businesses make a huge impact in our economy and are facing hiring challenges due to our current nation-wide labour shortage.

That’s why, through a series of collaborative sessions (Design Labs) with representatives from local small-to-medium sized organizations (SMEs), we’re developing different solutions for accessing, recruiting, and retaining newcomer talent. Led by the Immigrant Employment Councils of Canada and funded by Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship Canada, we’ve been invited as one of six communities across the country to participate in the “Building SME networks” project. We’ll play a key role in understanding and amplifying the perspective of SMEs (small: 0-99 employees, medium: 100-499 employees) with the intention of improving employment outcomes for immigrants and employers within SME workplaces in Niagara and beyond.

Each session will help us to capture insights, build capacity and find new ways to hire and engage immigrant employees. Together we will converse, learn, and explore the complexity of diversity and inclusion. On the other side of this initiative, we will have created new connections and identified solutions that can be implemented to address labour market challenges in innovative ways.

If you lead within a Niagara-based SME and are willing to contribute your perspectives and ideas to these efforts, please email

As a participant in this project, you will improve your connection with the settlement sector; play a crucial role in co-designing engagement and partnership models & gain valuable solutions tailored to your needs and capacities.
