The COVID-19 pandemic is creating economic and employment disruption in ways that are not familiar to the vast majority of us in Niagara. In the short term, we are all focused on the health and safety of ourselves, our families, and the essential service workers in health and long term care, food supply chains, transport, and infrastructure. We care about our health system and want to ensure it has the ability to cope with those who fall ill, and has the resources required to support the sick and help them on the road to recovery. This is, and should be, our priority.
Our NWPB staff are working from home and playing our part in flattening the curve. In the upcoming days and weeks, NWPB staff will be collecting economic and employment information, aggregating facts and figures, and sharing them with our partners in the community. We will look to provide factual, but calm insight during this time of uncertainty and change. We are committed to working with our partners, and to offering our economic and employment insight at this challenging time. The story will be complex as businesses and employment patterns change. Our hope is that our work can be part of that larger effort working collectively across Niagara to assess options and supports that ensures future community prosperity and health.
We would encourage all Niagara residents to keep up to date on local COVID-19 updates through Niagara Region’s Public Health Department. Businesses who are experiencing challenges can share their stories with their municipality’s economic development office or Niagara Region’s economic development office. Both employers and job seekers can receive support from any of Niagara’s Employment Ontario service providers. Niagara’s Chambers of Commerce and business associations are offering advocacy, education, and timely resources and support through the pandemic.
All of Niagara’s oars are in the water, and, as a region, we are all pulling in the same direction.
We are collecting data to better understand who is looking for work and what kind of opportunities jobseekers are searching for. This data is completely anonymous and non-personally identifiable.
